It began at Tom Christiansen's Advanced Perl talk. I needed a way to test unicode. Perl (versions 8.1.0 and newer, as I was told) are able to spit out utf-8 unicode various ways. For testing, I like to execute something like perl -CO -le'print "\x{270c}"'.
